Lose Muscle After 40?
I hope you are all off to fantastic new year. Below are some of the questions I have received this week. As always, please feel free to send me any questions you may have on any subject.
Kate. Once you hit 40 years of age,
I heard you lose muscle if you don't use it. So once you get motivated and
start working out, do you regain the muscle or not? HELP!
Sandy Fresno
Sandy: Muscle is typically lost due to poor nutrition not for lack of use. However they seem to go hand in hand. I believe what you are referring to has more to do with decreased hormone levels in a person's body as they age.
The reason you notice more muscle loss after 40 years old is because many things change, including metabolism and hormone levels. Muscle is built from Testosterone and protein. Naturally as you age, hormone levels start to decrease in production. There is help for that though through bio identical hormone replacement therapy and many people are experiencing great benefits from bio identical replacement therapy. Also, it is proven that exercise increases testosterone levels in both men and women as well as metabolism and serotonin levels in the brain. There are so many reasons to exercise, it's hard to find a reason not to. I hope that helps !
Hello: My child attends high school at Tulare Union. Recently, the school allowed the Army to come in and give a presentation to all students. I personally do not want my child influenced to join the military and was deeply angered by the incident. I would like to prevent my child from being a part of any outside solicitation that may occur at the school. What do you suggest? Anonymous
Dear Anonymous: My advice to you
is to get involved with your child's teachers and school. When events are
taking place at school, the children are made aware of it before it occurs.
If you asked your child frequently about school, they will probably inform
you. Also, check and see if the school sends out daily bulletins via email.
Lastly, if those avenues of approach do not work, then go to a school board
meeting and get involved.
Hope that helps.
