Daylight Savings
It's about time. Yes pholks, we're springing ahead sooner than normal and that's great news, as far as I'm concerned.
With Day Light Savings Time coming earlier and Major League Baseball spring training already in motion, I'm a happy camper even though I rarely do any camping.
More daylight is a great thing. As I have said many times, I'm really not afraid of the dark and haven't been for well over 50 years, but I just don't like long nights. I've had spring fever since the day after Christmas and have had three of my best pairs of Bermuda shorts cleaned and ironed since New Years Day. Ironing shorts while watching bowl games has become somewhat of a tradition in my home. My wife Kathy has gotten used to that particular quirk and even thinks that baseball games on TV would be a great time for even more ironing but that still needs to be ironed out.
Ground Hog Day was a little depressing when that furry little rodent did his thing and predicted six more weeks of winter weather. Of course there has been some terrible weather across the nation but we're had some pretty nice days here in the Valley despite the devastating freeze.
The whirl of wind machines cost me lots of sleep with consistent thoughts of frozen fairways and greens. But hopefully that has passed for the rest of the first half of this calendar year. All I can say is that furry little beast had better not cross my golf cart path any time soon. Of course, if he stays in the fairways he will be safe.
The point is, pholks, the moving up of DST (Daylight Savings Time) is something to celebrate.
Longer hours of daylight are great for the spirit, at least my spirit. Sure, I have had some memorable times in the dark but over the long haul the evening hours have been the best. Working and playing in the yard, cruising streets and rural roads, camping, walking, Barbequing, playing softball, chatting, general horsing around, and just passing the time in evenings is great in the Valley.
Although I wake up at the same time year around makes little difference regarding the amount of day light. Many pholks think DST is a bunch of hooey and a waste of time. But they're wrong. It is time well spent, or at least time which carries options on how to spend it.
I find it strange that some people argue that there shouldn't be any changes at all in the time. I don't buy that for a minute. There are some who even maintain that DST should be permanent but that really doesn't make much sense when you stop a moment to think about it. Those who prefer darkness have rights too.
Those who make light of this daylight hours thing should take an extra hour to ponder the real consequences. They should make hay while the sun shines. They should welcome the extra time to cut their own lawns, water the flowers, walk the dog, smell the roses (which they have had extra daylight to water and fertilize).
Well, I guess I have fertilized this issue enough. Suffice it to say, I have shed some light on the topic and cast my shadow on the subject.
I just want you pholks to remember to set all your clocks, watches, microwaves and computers ahead an hour this weekend.
And, I'll see you all later—just a little earlier.
